The Indonesians are moving to a new capital. It is East Kalimantan. It is now called ‘Nusantara’. Earlier, Jakarta was the capital of Indonesia.

Nusantara

East Kalimantan or Jakarta is located in the Borneo island. The plan to shift the capital here was announced in 2019. It was announced by President Joko Widodo.

Reasons for moving out of Jakarta

Jakarta has been the capital of Indonesia since 1949. Jakarta is facing environmental and financial issues. Pollution is increasing in Jakarta. It has been consistently ranked as one of the most polluted cities in the world. Jakarta is in Java island. And Nusantara is in Borneo island. The size of Borneo island is larger than Java island. Currently, Jakarta is densely populated. This is adding to the burden borne by the Indonesian Government.  Also, Jakarta is sinking. By 2050, most of the Jakarta is expected to go under water. This is mainly because Jakarta is surrounded by several rivers. These rivers are prone to frequent floods. Between 2019 and 2020 many cities in Jakarta sank up to 10.7 cm.

What is the plan?

All the government institutions, presidential palace, international organization buildings and foreign embassy buildings are to be moved to Nusantara. It is to cost 33 billion USD to execute the plan. Around 2,56,142 hectares of land has been allocated to build the capital city.

Nusantara: Name reason

Nusantara means archipelago. It represents philosophical, sociological and historical aspects.

Concerns

Nusantara is rich in biodiversity. According to the environmentalists, moving the capital to Nusantara will lead to massive deforestation. Also, it will put the trees and animals in the region at danger.

Other countries

The other countries that recently changed its capital are as follows:

A group of hundred billionaires have submitted a plea to the World Economic Forum. The title of the plea is “Make us Pay more tax”

What did the millionaires do?

A group of millionaires and billionaires have issued a plea. The group calls themselves as “Patriotic Millionaires”. They are of the view that the ultra wealthy are not contributing their share towards the global recovery from the pandemic. This is because of unfair tax system. According to them, they have witnessed wealth gain while the rest of the world suffered in different angles. And so they want to pay a fair share of their earnings to the global recovery.

What is the plea about?

The “Make us pay more tax” plea suggests to make a deal with the big companies. These companies will have to pay a minimum tax of 15% of their annual turnover. In most of the countries the rich need not pay annual taxes on assets such as stocks, artworks or real estates. This is because; these assets are taxed only when they are sold.

Why the plea?

The world went into one of its worst recession since World War II. And on the other hand, the millionaires became billionaires and the billionaires accumulated more and more wealth.  The fortune of the top ten billionaires increased at the rate of 15,000 USD per second! Also, their wealth increased to 1.5 trillion USD.

What is the plan?

Taxing the millionaires earning 5 million USD per year at 2% and taxing billionaires at 5% will bring in 2.52 trillion USD. This is enough to lift 2.3 billion people out of poverty. Also, this amount is sufficient to guarantee social protection and health care.

Current Scenario

No wealth tax is collected in most of South American countries except Columbia and Argentina. In 2021, the World Bank urged the countries to consider wealth tax.

Significance

The billionaires are pushing for wealth tax because it helps to replenish the state through COVID-19 relief schemes, reduce inequality and also regain social trust.

What happened?

Australian Open is one of the four important tournaments of the Grand Slam. It was to start on January 17, 2022. And Novak was to play on Day 1. Why did Australian Government deport Novak?

According to Australian Government, Novak has huge fan followers. On one side, he poses threat to the country as he is not vaccinated. The scientists of CRS have created a climate hazards and vulnerability atlas of India. CRS is Climate Research and Services and it operates under India Meteorological Department (IMD).

About the map

The scientists created the map based on 14 extreme weather events. They also considered the risks and threats imposed by these 14 weather events on the local population and their economy. Here ‘local’ is pertained to district and not state or village.

Launched on Foundation Day of IMD

Every year, the Indian Meteorological Department celebrates its foundation day on January 14. The map was launched during this year’s celebrations. It was launched by the Union Minister of Earth Sciences Dr Jitendra Singh. The IMD was established in 1875. It operates under Minister of Earth Science. It is responsible for meteorological observations, seismology and weather events. It is one of the six regional meterological centres of the World Meteorological Organization.

Features of the atlas

Lightning causes highest casualties in India. It is followed by floods, cyclones and fog. They also cause high economic and livelihood losses.

Climate Research and Services

The headquarters of CRS is located in Pune. It provides weather forecast, AWS data, gridded data, radiation data, agro met data, and meteorological data.

Significance

The atlas helps to take precautionary measures. It uses disaster data, hourly autographic data, cyclone track data, daily rainfall data, population density data, storm surge data, etc.
